Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime: "We’ll 'experiment' with smartphones, tablets" (RymatiCAST.com)

“It’s a topic that comes up all the time. It’s a debate that’s constantly had,” said Nintendo of America president/chief operating officer Reginald "Reggie" Fils-Aime during a wide-ranging interview with KING 5 News. “We recognize that there are a lot of smartphones and tablets out there, and so what we’re doing is we’re being very smart in how we use these devices as marketing tools for our content.”

“We’re also doing a lot of experimentation of what I would call the little experiences you can have on your smartphone and tablet that will drive you back to your Nintendo hardware,” Fils-Aime said. “It’s largely going to be much more marketing activity-oriented, but we’ve done little things where there’s some element of gameplay – a movement, a shaking, something like that.”

“We believe our games are best played and best enjoyed on our devices,” he said, “and so the full game play will only be on Nintendo devices.”

Fils-Aime admits that those experiences came much later than Nintendo wanted, and he uses the new Wii Fit U game as an example.

“This is a game we wanted to launch in the first quarter of this year, not the first quarter of 2014,” he said. “The delay in some of this key software is really what’s been difficult for us. What I can tell you is that we have a very strong pipeline coming.”

Capcom unveiled and dubbed the latest evolution of Street Fighter 4 at yesterday's EVO 2013 event, confirming previously reported details along the way. Ultra Street Fighter 4 introduces five new characters - the returning quartet of Elena, Rolento, Hugo, and Poison, and a mystery fifth - as well as new modes, stages, features, and lots of feedback-guided game play tweaks.

Ultra Street Fighter 4 will be available early next year on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC as a DLC update for either Super Street Fighter 4 or SSF4: Arcade Edition, and as a standalone retail game.

The new Xbox will be called Xbox 1. The system has a sleeker new console, a new controller and a new Kinect system. The Xbox 1 is also voice-operated and can be turned on by simply saying "Xbox on."

It takes you to a "personal home screen" and you don't have to sit and wait for game updates.

You're able to watch live Television, watch movies and surf the internet on the Xbox 1. You can switch seamlessly via voice control from Television, to games, to music, all centered on the Xbox 1.

It's a cloud-based machine sporting an improved Kinect camera, along with a re-designed controller with a new d-pad and integrated battery compartment. The console itself has a Blu-ray drive, 500 GB of internal storage and an eight-core x86 CPU paired with 8 GB of system memory. In many ways, it's similar to the make-up of the PS4.

Microsoft has announced that the live Television features coming to its newly revealed Xbox One will first be available in North America and then, will then transition into other regions after that. In a press release from the company, Microsoft noted that "live TV with Kinect Navigation, live TV with OneGuide, Trending and NFL on Xbox" will all roll out in the US "at launch," but was "anticipating global scale over time."

Microsoft also said that the Xbox One will require a separate cable box, specifying "at launch," so it's possible that the console maker has other plans to deliver television content. The Xbox One is set for release later on this year and Microsoft has not yet revealed a price.

Does Microsoft (MSFT) even need to launch a new Xbox? Despite Nintendo’s (NTDOY) recent release of its next-generation home video game console, the Xbox 360 racked up its twenty-sixth consecutive month as the top-selling console in February. U.S. sales totaled 302,000 units according to The NPD Group’s February data, placing the Xbox ahead of Sony’s (SNE) PlayStation 3 and both the Wii and Wii U. The Xbox 360 holds an estimated 41% share of the current-generation console market in the U.S.
